The Family Support Pathway (can also be downloaded at the right of this page) shows what the support options are for friends, relatives and carers of people with a substance misuse problem.

If you would like general advice on the effects of different drugs and what the effects and side-effects are we would recommend that you first visit Frank at the website (www.talktofrank.com) or phone their confidential freephone number on 0800 776600.  The Frank website is arguably the best UK online resource for up-to-date information on a wide variety of drugs, their effects and recent 'hot topics' such as legal highs.

The Family and Friends Alliance Leaflet (English language version) details various support groups that operate locally.  This leaflet is available in a variety of languages to the right of this page.

The Family and Friends Newsletter was incorporated into the Sheffield DAAT Newsletter after December 2009.  The back-catalogue of Friends and Family newsletters produced before this date are available for download at the bottom of this page.

Carer Support

 For people caring for those with a mental illness along with a substance misuse issue (also known as a 'dual diagnosis') 'RETHINK' in Sheffield provide a variety of services including carer support.

Around 6 million people in the UK spend a significant proportion of their life providing unpaid support to family or friends. This can involve caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. If you are supporting or caring for someone using substances you will be entitled to a carers assessment please contact RODA for more details.
